‘A Slice of Cherry Pie’: The Cookbook

At long last spring is almost here. I do love winter, as much as I love all of the seasons for what they each uniquely bring, but there does come a point in time when I start to long for the turning of the season and the changes it brings. That point has now come for me and I’m really happy to see spring flowers starting to pop up and the days gradually staying lighter for longer. I’ve just come back from a lunchtime walk and the sun is shining brightly and the air feels warmer. It seems the perfect time to tell you the news I’ve been bursting to tell you for so long: I’m busy working on my very own cookbook, based on this blog, which is due to be published next year.

I’ve had the idea for a book for a long time and it’s taken quite a while to get to this point – the idea needed development, a proposal had to be written, an agent and then a publisher found – but now the publishing contract is signed, sealed and delivered and I can finally share this wonderful development with you all. I hope to be able to tell you a little more as the finer details are worked out and share with you some of the ins and outs of my own personal experience of writing a cookbook.

I’d very much like to thank each and every one of you; those of you who’ve been with me since the beginning, those who found me more recently and everyone who’s ever engaged with me and the blog. You’ve given me the encouragement and confidence to keep going and, without a shadow of a doubt, you’ve helped to turn my dream of writing my own cookbook into a reality. It’s exciting, it’s thrilling and, I don’t mind telling you, a little bit scary too. But I’m enjoying every moment of it and I truly hope that you’ll continue along this wonderful journey with me.

Helen – I do indeed remember! It’s been hard keeping it so quiet but I really needed to wait for everything to be finalised and the contract to be signed before I formally announced it. I’m so happy now that I have!

Congratulations! I would love to pick your brain some time about your process. I’ve just finished writing my proposal and sample chapter. Do you have any recommendations in finding an agent?

    Thanks Jen and Glamah.

Hi Brooke – that's fantastic, well done. I used The Writers & Artists Yearbook (British) to find mine. You need someone who works in your literary area and doesn't have any similar projects that would compete. But most importantly you need to feel comfortable that they're right for you. Do your homework before approaching them. Good luck x

We’re all so proud of you, Julia. You are so deserving of your own cookbook. I can’t wait to purchase a copy! Be sure to at least have a guide to convert metric measurements into our American cups and ounces! You are destined for great things!!

Hi Chris – thank you for your lovely comments. The metric conversion can be tricky, especially with baking, but I certainly hope to have a conversion guide.

    Julia:
You should talk about your 'back & forth' with the agent and the publisher. Are you sending recipes to friends, etc. to test; talk about that process. In your recipe for caramel with nuts, do you use brown sugar or white?
    Good luck, bermudashorts
